Our intention had been to spend one more day in Mobile but this morning we awoke feeling worn out by a month of travelling and decided that what we needed was head for Apalachicola and just relax for a few days. Since Apalachicola was a four-hour drive and we had two things we wanted to do that were not exactly on the way it took us all day to get there.

To start we drove back to Dauphine Island and took the car ferry from across the bay to Fort Morgan. We stood on the upper deck for the entire crossing just enjoying the scene and the company of the seagulls who flapped alongside the ferry.
After a quick look at Fort Morgan we drove to Fairhope, AL. This small town has been on my list of places I wanted to check out. It is listed 2nd on the Southern Magazine list of Great Small towns in the South. Number one is Beaufort, SC, which we have visited several times and will be returning to early in March. We had our picnic lunch sitting on a bench at Fairhope’s waterfront and then walked a bit in the downtown area. Our brief encounter with Fairhope was enough to put it on our list of “Places to return to”.
Then we put the pedal to the metal and headed for Apalachicola accompanied by our current audio book “Deep South” by Paul Theroux that was recommended to us by Anita Graham. It is a collection of stories of his travels in the south.
