This was our first full museum day of the trip and we held up well although it did require a large infusion of caffeine at lunchtime.

“A painting is not a picture of an experience – it is an experience”
Mark Rothko
Their current major exhibit is a Rothko Retrospective and we began with that. It was enlightening to see his early work and the progression to his signature style. The audio guide although a bit verbose did provide some insights in how to view the paintings. “…. feel the movement within the stillness of the painting itself”
The exhibit is a rare retrospective of Rothko's work showing his progression from realistic to abstract. I also like to break up the presentation of individual paintings with pictures of people looking at the paintings in the gallery setting. In fact, if I had the time and perseverance, I think I would take more of these types of pictures because they show people's reactions to the artwork.

Next came the evolution into the signature rectangular canvasses that evoke moods rather than messages. They indeed are emotional, but I am not sure better viewed in limited numbers. There were 49 of them and I must admit that with as many shown together, although instructive, the sheer number was overwhelming.
After viewing the Rothko exhibit we wandered through the galleries in both museum buildings. We particularly enjoyed an exhibit of the arts of Islamic Lands, as well as, the Native American and African Art collections. The Deco Nights: Evenings in the Jazz Age exhibit had some wonderful pieces including some surprisingly colorful Kodak Cameras.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is a wonderful Museum -- smaller than the MET in New York, and the MFA in Boston, but worthy of a very full day or several smaller trips. Given their active changing exhibits, we certainly will include it on a list of Art Museums we keep about museums worth a visit whenever we are in a particular city.
We finished this day in time to hightail it back to the Hotel and watch the Patriots Game. They won, and it’s on to the AFC Title Game.
