Harry and Ben walked to the Santa Caterina Market in the El Born district for lunch while Marsha went wandering and shoe shopping we met up at the Picasso Museum.

The museum is housed in 5 adjoining renovated Gothic Palaces along a tiny street in the El Born neighborhood. Picasso’s family moved to Barcelona when he was fourteen and he enrolled in art school. Even at that age his work was impressive. The collection is displayed chronologically through his early years of copying other artists work, through his Blue Period which followed the suicide of his best friend, and his Rose period when his first serious love (Fernand Olivier) came on the scene. The final rooms display his Cubist works.

After the museum we strolled to the Church of Santa Maria del Mar a few blocks away and enjoyed coffee in the square facing the Church before we entered. The Cathedral of the Sea was built rather quickly in the 14th century. The interior is purely Catalan Gothic thanks to a fire during the 1939 civil war that destroyed the Baroque interiors. It is starkly beautiful.
Then we rested up for what we expected to be a fantastic dinner. We were not disappointed. The Santa Rita Experience is basically a supper club in the chef’s apartment. There were 9 other diners attending today but there is room for 15. It was a pleasant 20 minute walk there through the El Born neighborhood and the Citadel Park. We shared a table with a man and his wife from New Zealand and their daughter who is a chef based in London. They were delightful. The best explanation that I can give of what we experienced is to list the menu:
Marinated tuna with mojo picon and Spanish pickles.
Artichokes stuffed with quail eggs, baby green peas, tunpinamba and coriander pesto.
Potato ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and truffle mayonnaise
Fresh white asparagus with scallops and red prawns sauce
Veal cooked at low temperature with “tostones” sweet potato
Each course accompanied by local organic wines.
And for dessert
Fresh cheese mousse and beetroot, “tostones” green tea and pistachio
And Dark Chocolate with lentils
Espresso (Decaf)
We began at 9pm and finished after midnight. Even at that hour there were still others on the streets enjoying the evening.
It truly was an experience. Ben noted on facebook that it was the best meal of his life. Not feint praise.
