We decided to spend one more day in Houston. Our destinations for the day were the Menil Collection and Rothko Chapel.
The Menil Collection was recommended by Tim and Betsy Groves. If you have any recommendations for places that we must see along our route please pass them along. And don’t forget to send along your suggestions for songs that pertain to our destinations, state of mind etc.

The Menil Collection is really an entire neighborhood:
- the main building designed by architect Renzo Piano
- the Rothko Chapel
- three other museum buildings
- many of the 1930’s bungalows in the surrounding streets which house support services.
John and Dominique de Menil collecting focus began with modern art but soon they understood the relationship of these works to antiquities and collected heavily in that area. We loved the way the antiquities were displayed. The stark white walls and glass cases had minimal signage and were strikingly lit. Combined with the prohibition of photography and lack of audio tours allows the visitor to focus on individual objects. This is a rather pleasant change and one we might try to work into our future museum visits.
Since the Menil Collection allows no interior photographs, all of the interior shots you see in these slide shows were retried using Google Images.
It was a magnificent sunny day so we had brunch on the Café’s patio and then we strolled the neighborhood where we encountered a drum circle.
The paintings in the Rothko chapel were a bit too stark for our taste.
Before heading back to the hotel we stopped for a short visit with John, Sarah and Eva. When we departed Eva was throwing us kisses and saying bye bye.
