Two interesting stops today: First, Bedford VA where more soldiers died on D-Day than any other US town (per capata) and second, at the new home of our friends Bernie and Lynn Cosell who relocated from Lexington 22 years ago to Pearisburg VA to raise sheep.
This morning we went to see the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. It is on a hill just outside of the town with lovely views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was a cool morning and we wandered through the site. It was interesting, but not quite as interesting as the real place -- no big surprise.
Back when Harry worked at BBN one of his co-workers was Bernie Cosell. Bernie and his wife Lynn lived in Lexington back then and 20 years ago they moved to Pearisburg Virginia to become sheep farmers. Shortly after their move there we visited with them. Ben and Will really enjoyed the sheep, the dogs and the whole scene. Today we spent a delightful few hours with them touring the house they built 3 years ago and enjoying a delicious Chinese lunch graciously prepared by Lynn. The house is an homage to Frank Lloyd Wright design and is set at the end of their property so that their front windows afford spectacular views of their farm, rolling hills and the mountains beyond.
The photos we took of the house will hopefully give you a better idea the design and many of the details like the spiral staircases and interior brick columns. Besides the wonderful kitchen, den, living room and dining room. There is also a game room complete with pool table, juke box, pin ball machine and slot machine. Then there is an exercise room, and an indoor wave pool, two studies, and a library. As you might expect of people who raise Merino Sheep Lynn dyes and weaves wool. So there are also rooms for weaving, and dyeing, and wool storage. And to make things easier there is a dumb waiter that services all three floors and an elevator.
